Immediately after the Tenang by-election, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek was quick to respond to calls for his resignation over the lackadaisical support of Chinese voters to BN.

On one hand, he snubbed the opposition by chiding them that he would only listen to his members, and not others. On the other hand, he seemed to have taken pride of his record of resigning three times in two years. From his utterances, it’s clear that he simply wanted to show the public that tendering resignation is no big deal to him.

It is also his way to publicly side track or deflect his blunders and scandals by drawing on public sympathy.

Chua should have told the public why he had to resign then. His resignation was prompted by his sex DVD scandal, not because of upholding integrity and principle over substantive matters of public interest.

While attempting to impress the public that he is not at all perturbed by calls for his resignation, perhaps the public is still mindful of his failure in fulfilling his promise of relinquishing all public posts - he chose not to resign as Labis MP before the dissolution of Parliament. He was then clever enough to cling on to his post as Labis MP because he was well aware that he would be barred from contesting in elections for five years should he resign as promised.

But what made things worse was that he had the audacity to claim ignorance on the necessity for him to tender his resignation to the House speaker.

As an educated man who graduated as a medical doctor, do you believe he is that ignorant?

This is a man who is not only immoral, he is also one who will not keep his word or promises, as displayed by his failure to keep his words and promises to quit all posts after he was caught having extra marital affairs with a woman.

The writer is Pandan MP and former MCA chief.
