Several years ago, certain groups representing Malay interests were up in arms over the ‘monopoly’ by Indian vendors in the distribution of newspapers.

Leaders of these groups voiced their concern over the domination by Indians and were lobbying for bumiputeras, especially Malays, to be allowed to participate in the business.

Upon hearing their lament, the president of the newspaper vendors responded by openly stating that anyone is welcome to do the work of a newspaper vendor.

But he cautioned that it was really hard work, having to wake up in the wee hours of the morning, often required to work under the afternoon sun and all this for a paltry commission.

When the protesting Malay groups discovered this was not a piece of cake and were confronted with the reality of the hardship and suffering they have to undergo, they backed away quietly. There were no more grouses, complaints or laments from them.

This little tale tells us something very obvious. Life is not a bed of roses and Malaysians of all walks of life should be made aware of this, especially those who look forward to reading their newspapers in the comfort of home, come rain or shine.
