I just want to first comment on Suhakam's deputy chairman Harun Hashim's question to ISA detainee Tan Hock Lee. In your report it was stated that Harun asked Tan if he would prefer to go to jail for the serious crime of forging currency instead of being detained under the ISA.

This was I thought such a silly question for a former judge to have asked. First of all, why allow the state to have this wide discretion to detain and torture its people when there is a court of law and laws? Was it Tan's choice to be under ISA or the ordinary laws? So you see the silliness of Harun's question?

It's sheer laziness of the police and home minister and lack of respect for the judicial institution that has brought Tan to grief. Yes, just go and torture somebody if you have a suspicion that the person has committed a crime, instead of initiating procedures under the criminal law.

The other is the 'mysterious death' of 20-year-old S Tharma Rajen while in police custody. There is such a stalemate on the issue of police violence.

Things like these are not raised at the Umno general assembly. Umno Malays are just into the big drama of tears and pretended resignations. Pathetic display of feudalism if you ask me.

I do not know what the Bar Council is doing. They just do public relations statements to the press and do not mobilise enough on human rights abuses despite being its 10,000-strong membership.

We really need a commission of inquiry into police. I am not sure if Suhakam is up to it. They are so scared.
