UK-based Malaysian Student Department director, Dr Kamarudin M Nor's letter More non-Malays registered with MSD ought to be welcomed because of its thrust. His fulsome defence of the work of the MSD in support of non-Malay Malaysian students in the UK and Eire should be looked at in perspective.

It is indicative of the fact that Malaysia has changed over the last few years. Not too many years ago, someone in his position would not have batted an eyelid in the face of accusations that non-Malay Malaysians were being neglected in any public sphere. Indeed, it would have been a signal to his masters that his was a job well done.

If what Kamarudin says about the support that MSD has been giving non-Malay Malaysian students is true — and there is no reason to disbelieve him — then things have changed much and for the better (and certainly so since my student days in London).

So, we should congratulate him for doing his job as properly as he should. Let's give credit where it's due.
