If I remember correctly, Malaysia's stand over the Anwar Ibrahim affair and the ISA 6 (Keadilan members and reformasi activists detained without trial) - was that these were internal affairs and that foreigners should not get involved. Fine.

In today's The Star , Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad is quoted as saying that " Malaysia wants to see the release of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi immediately".

Why? After all, compared to detention of former deputy premier Anwar and the reformasi boys under the ISA, the Myanmar regime's action follows physical violence that reportedly left over 100 dead! If there is justification for detention, here is one.

I would have thought that Mahathir and his government should be cheering on the ruling authorities in Myanmar. Maybe somebody can enlighten me on the difference.

Similarly, I cannot understand United Nations envoy Tan Sri Razali Ismail going around Myanmar to obtain reconciliation between the antagonists, and more specifically this time to get Suu Kyi released.

Is he wearing some special kind of glasses that completely blind him to what is happening is his own backyard? Surely the Myanmar authorities cannot take him seriously. I wouldn't!
