Assuming that liberalism has no frontiers, Malaysians who wish to join this bandwagon should bear in mind of its logical conclusion and consequences.
The problem with Malaysia is that liberalism can mean different things for Muslims and non-Muslims.
For instance, Islam can react more harshly towards Muslims who left the religion and became its critic and hostile towards it compared to non-Muslims, who, obviously know very little about Islam.
Consequently subscription to the idea of liberalism also can lead a Muslim to become an agnostic or an atheist, which he would want his fellow Malaysian Muslims to accept him or her as an agnostic or an atheist.
When it involves Islamic family life, a liberalist would have no problem in a family where the father is a Muslim, the wife a Catholic, and the grown-up children may be a Buddhist, a Hindu, a Taoist, a Protestant or agnostic or atheist.
This is already happening in Indonesia.
A liberal also must accept the idea of same sex marriages and euthanasia and co-habitation whereas Islam simply forbids euthanasia the beginning and the end of a life is for Allah to decide.
The concept of being sick or terminally ill is completely different from other beliefs. For instance, under normal circumstances Prof Stephen Hawkings would have asked his doctor to end his life, but look at his contribution to science. Thus how can a person end his life if the misery was caused by his taking huge loans from ah long for gambling.
In terms of economy, a liberal is a great believer in market economy. Everything should be entrusted to the market forces and supply and demand.
But in the history of the world’s economy, the market forces have not always been ‘kosher’. Right now almost every bank in the US and the UK are being fined billions of dollars for their misconduct in rate-rigging and all kinds of collusion.
In everyday life, a liberal would have no problem with women in slutty clothes which invariably would only bring harm to themselves.
I could go on and on.
So how far is a liberal willing to go?
