I refer to your recent report on the refusal by the home minister to grant a permit for the print copy of malaysiakini .

I do not know if malaysiakini is considering a judicial review of the decision. The decision to go for judicial review may ensue as a right of course, but the political climate on press freedom and independence of the judiciary are factors that all applicants have to seriously consider.

I think Aliran has experience of a judicial review when it was refused a permit to publish its magazine in Bahasa Malaysia.

If I remember correctly, that decision and several others pertaining to press freedom finally 'caught up' with the judges culminating in the infamous assault on the judiciary (by the executive under Dr Mahathir Mohamad) in 1988.
