With or without Anwar, the future beckons
In the few days after Anwar Ibrahim was freed by the Federal Court, much speculation has been made regarding what he will be do in the future. Will he rejoin Umno or will he continue with the opposition?
Will he just sit back and relax and enjoy being with his family which he has been away from for the past six long years? Will he really continue with the reforms he was talking about during his days in the wilderness?
Inevitably there will be those who think that Anwar can still be a force to be reckoned with and there will be others like Ahmad Ikhlas who will ask Where was Anwar during the judicial crisis of '88?
It must be remembered that together with Anwar in 1988, there were also all the Malaysian voters. Together with Anwar, the majority of the Malaysian voters have allowed the excesses of the executive in the past 20 years or so. Together with Anwar, the majority of the Malaysian voters did nothing about what happened to the judiciary in 1988.
The past is something which no one can rewrite, and it is pointless just harping on it. The future beckons and the majority of Malaysian voters must wake up from their slumber. Maybe then, either together with Anwar or other future Malaysian leaders, can we ensure that Malaysia achieves her full potential in the days ahead.
