I read with utter disgust on the way Universiti Malaya, supposedly Malaysia's premier university, forcefully made sure that Dr Edmund Terence Gomez and his family are being persecuted.

From all that has taken place, even the simplest minds will see the intellectual value that Gomez will bring back after his two-year tenure at a top UN agency. Any university should be proud that one of their staff has been given this honour and should step forward to assist him in all avenues.

But no, our UM seems to have ready stock of Einsteins ready to take Gomez's place. So why then bother if he or his wife comes back or not?

Gomez, I may not be of your brilliant status to advice you on what is best for you and your family but as a migrant and someone who has felt the brunt of discrimination in Malaysia, I will say that you and your whole family should move regardless of what UM says.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that those 'brilliant minds' in UM would not understand. All the grey hair, goatees and intelligent-looking glasses that they sport is just another way of saying 'Please see how intelligent we appear' in order to compensate for the vacuums that are attached to their necks.

Please be selfish for a moment and make the right choice for your family.

As for Pak Lah, you should be ashamed of your administration for allowing this brilliant man to be made to resign from UM. You must know by now that someone like him is of too much value for Malaysia to lose.

Any country will snatch this man away the first chance they get. It seems like you are losing more and more control of policies under your guard. Your higher education minister had shown what 'intellectual' minds he has under his watch as well.

Where does the buck stop, Pak Lah?
