LETTER | I refer to the Malaysiakini report Speaker: I need not give reasons for rejecting questions.

It was interesting to hear how the speaker of Parliament was justifying and defending his action to reject a motion raised by members of the House.

When the reasons were asked for his rejection of a question or motion from the members of the House, he quoted from the Indian Parliament guidelines on the position of the speaker who cannot be questioned or challenged

The guidelines from the Indian Parliament is correct if the speaker conducts the proceedings with unwavering faultless justice and fairness.

Such a speaker will obviously be respected by all members of the House and even the public.

If this quality of upholding justice it deserves is not shown by the speaker, then challenging the speaker is not wrong because Parliament is an institution which must be seen as truth-driven and the foremost upholder of faultless justice and fairness.

If he cannot conduct the proceedings with the highest quality of justice, he may be seen as an advocate of tyranny, despotism and of an autocratic leadership.

Therefore, it will not be morally wrong for members of the House to challenge such a speaker.

If he is allowed to become an advocate of tyrants, despots or cruel and selfish greedy autocrats, he will be nothing more than a willing tool of such unworthy leaders.

We hope that the speaker will realise and repent of what he is doing and realise it is against a fair and just democracy and will make Parliament a mockery of the science of proper government.
