Malaysiakinigate parallels Clintongate
I regret that even such a sensible person like Prof Ramasamy misses the point in this saga of 'malaysiakinigate' ([#1] Soros saga shows government's weakness [/#], March 7). It is not whether it received funding directly or indirectly from George Soros nor whether the government is right or wrong to attack it. Those are non-issues. So what? was always my response. Moreover, I was even prepared to go one step further and argue that once malaysiakini had denied it, that was the end of it and I chose to believe its denial.
However, the point is that it now transpires that malaysiakini has been mendacious and had received funding from Soros - albeit indirectly - and chose to cover it up. That is what makes what it has done unacceptable. And that - to borrow a phrase - is the real crap !
The more liberal of American commentators did not condemn President Bill Clinton for his shenanigans with Monica Lewinsky (a private matter between two consenting adults was the libertarian view). They condemn him for the subsequent lies and cover-up. That is the parallel that one should focus on with regard to this 'malaysiakinigate' saga.
