Suhakam's intention to visit the Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees with or without police approval should be done immediately to ascertain that there is no abuse and torture of the detainees.

Furthermore the detainees should be released or charged at the end of 14 days, which is the length of time anyone can be remanded for investigations before he or she is charged or released.

These two things are the most urgent and Suhakam has the mandate to see to this.

Dr Rais Yatim may have his own views about ISA, but no one should be tortured while in custody and detention.

If the police cannot come up with any evidence by the end of the 14-day period of any threat to national security, the detainees must be released.
