I refer to the letter Understanding the bumiputera's position 2008.

It is an interesting letter but nevertheless it subtly still puts the blame on the non bumiputeras - which means mainly the Chinese.

The writer rightly said that the rapid economic growth in the 80's and 90's was mainly due to foreign direct investment (FDI). However, it is not mainly due to political stability but the perceived productivity factor.

FDI came in mainly because all these multinationals felt that the population was productive enough to make their goods and services competitive in the global market. Why did FDI stop coming in and the FDI that had been invested hitherto start pulling out in the early 2000s?

Simply because our NEP and corruption had made the country too unproductive and the investors just moved to more productive areas like Singapore, China, India and Thailand, and soon Vietnam.

The multinationals do not care whether their employees are bumiputeras or not - they just care about their return on investment.

The writer advised "non Malays to take a step back and not to push the bumiputeras into a corner". This does not reflect the reality of a globalised economy. If the non-Malays take a step back and the bumiputeras does not, cannot or is unable to step forward, then it will be the end of our economy which means the end of Malaysia.

The rest of the world will not take a step back and wait for Malaysians. Also, if the non- bumiputeras take a step back and do not go to private universities and are not given places in public universties due to NEP, then you will have more unskilled labour around which in turn will drive away FDI.

The NEP depends very much on an ever diminishing population of productive non-Malays (90% of taxes) supporting an ever increasing population of bumiputeras. Therefore, if anyone has read about the Malthusian theory in economics, one can tell it is an untenable situation.

The bumiputeras have had 50 years of advantage and all the government ever did was to keep increasing the size of the civil service to absorb the unemployable and unproductive bumiputera graduates.

The bumiputeras should have a good look at themselves and change for the better. Don’t just take the easy way out. And the government should not keep playing on their insecurities in order to stay in power.

The Malays are like the whites in the US, the majority. Therefore, by the rule of the game in democratic elections, the majority always win and the Malays will always lead this country. All the non-Malays, like the blacks in US, wanted is a clean and fair government.
