Let 'Confessions of Chu Mei-feng' proceed, gov't urged

The organiser of a planned Kuala Lumpur concert by disgraced Taiwanese politician Chu Mei-feng has appealed to the government to let her perform to allow her to start a new career.

The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has barred Chu, who is at the centre of a high-profile sex scandal in Taiwan, from performing in its hall, saying she is a bad role model for young people.

The MCA, which is a member of the ruling coalition, has made its stand known to Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung, who agreed that it was "not suitable" for Chu to perform here.

But Singapore-based John Production managing director Jackson Power told Thursday's Star newspaper that it was unfair for Malaysians to be judgemental and deny Chu a chance to lead a new life.

He said the concert would be a "clean" two-hour show featuring Chu - who was secretly filmed having sex with a married lover - recounting her unfortunate experience, singing and dancing.

Starting afresh

"Her political career has been destroyed following the sex scandal and she is trying to start afresh by tapping the entertainment industry using her talent in singing. What is so wrong about that?" he said.

"She is a person who has been deeply hurt and suffered great disgrace. She has already confessed and apologised, why should the society shut all doors on her?"

Organisers were still looking for a venue for Chu's concerts in Kuala Lumpur and northern Penang state, tentatively scheduled for March 23 and 24, the newspaper said.

The Malaysian performance would follow Chu's first public appearance as a singer in neighbouring Singapore over March 15-17 in a show entitled "Confessions of Chu Mei-feng".

The former Taipei city councillor has already released a book describing her ordeal after the scandal broke.

Chu, 36, gained notoriety after illicit VCDs of her sex session were released by a Taiwan tabloid and found their way onto the black market and the Internet. (AFP)
