The body of the last of the three victims of the Monday bridge collapse at Sungai Kampar here was found today.

NONE Kampar OCPD Supt Aziz Yusof said the body of Diryasree Vasudevan, 12, of Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Gopeng, was found at 10.45am near the Tronoh Mine, Sungai Kinta, 25km from the scene of the collapse.

The body had been taken to the Kampar Hospital for a post-mortem.

"The bodies have been handed over to the families. We have completed our task and the search is over," he said.

They were among 298 children taking part in a new government-backed camping programme aimed at fostering national unity.

The camp was part of the government's "1Malaysia" scheme, which is geared towards fostering integration among the multicultural nation's ethnic groups, through activities like traditional cooking, cultural education and games.

Deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin on Tuesday visited the site and spoke with distressed parents, promising the government would probe the cause of the collapse of the newly installed bridge.

Twenty-two pupils were on the suspension bridge when it collapsed on Monday night. Nineteen were rescued while three were swept away by the swift currents.

The bodies of the other two victims - a 12-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl - were found on Tuesday and last night.

MACC looks into construction details

Meanwhile in a related development, a Perak Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) spokesperson said that an investigation has been opened on the construction of the suspension bridge.

He said that initial findings revealed that the bridge could have been build without the approval of the Public Works Department.

"We will investigate if there are elements of corruption, in addition to finding whether there is a violation or disregard for proper procedures which should have been followed in the first place."

"We will investigate the matter thoroughly. The MACC feels there could be a strong case (for either corruption or wrongful procedure)," the MACC spokesperson told Malaysiakini .

Sources also revealed that the construction of the suspension bridge which had collapsed and killed three pupils was done without the approval from the Perak PWD.

It is learnt that a prior approval from the PWD was compulsory for all government buildings or projects.
