PAS's Youth wing today called on all Pakatan-ruled states to enforce a gradual blackout on all gambling outlets in their areas as proof of their commitment to their stance against gambling.

Its chief Nasrudin Hasan said all the local authorities under Pakatan state governments have to do is not renew the licences for the gambling premises.

NONE "States governed by the Pakatan Rakyat must be seen as better and more noble than the Umno and BN government by first setting a good example," he said at the opening of the PAS youth congress in Kota Bharu earlier today.

Nasrudin ( left ) said that no religion condones gambling, which raises questions among the rakyat as to which religion the BN government followed as a guide when approving the sports betting licence.

"The voters have given the mandate to the Pakatan Rakyat to effect change, preserve our homeland and all its people from evils such as gambling," he said.

'Make voter registration a must'

Earlier, Bernama reported the wing urged the government to make voter registration compulsory to ensure that the people exercised their right during elections.

Nasrudin said this was the first step to make voting compulsory.

About 28 percent or 4.39 million people aged 21 years and above have not registered as voters, of whom 65 per cent were bumiputera, he said.

Nasrudin proposed the setting up of a dialogue and civilisation centre to disseminate information on Islam to non-Muslims.

He said the centre could further enhance the understanding of Islam by non-Muslims, whose support for PAS was rising.

Meanwhile, PAS Muslimat chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh said the wing would table a motion on the setting up of the party's young Muslimat movement to woo young women to join the party.

"The motion will be debated at the Muslimat muktamar before it is tabled at the party's muktamar tomorrow," Nuridah told reporters after speaking at the opening of the 50th PAS Muslimat muktamar in Kota Bharu today.
