Malaysiakini today officially launched its latest version of its popular iPhone application, Mobilekini.

Mobilekini 2.0 includes support for four languages, plus the ability to share content with Facebook and Twitter.

NONE Based on feedback from users, this new version - which is much faster than Mobilekini 1.0 - provides access to reader’s comments.

“We believe that Mobilekini is the first iPhone application to support four different languages and three distinct scripts,” said Malaysiakini CEO Premesh Chandran.

“Readers can now get Malaysiakini news in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil - all in their native fonts.”

To date, Mobilekini has been downloaded on 10,000 Apple devices, including iPhones, iPods and iPads.

For now, readers get the application for free.

“The content is currently supported by advertising. As the community grows, Malaysiakini may decide whether to charge for the app,” added Premesh.

More new features to come

The iPhone app was developed by Murasu Systems Shd Bhd, winner of National ICT excellence award for mobile applications and a leading provider of languages-based technologies.

“It has been extremely exciting for us to work with Malaysiakini in taking their content into the mobile space.”

Mobilekini’s 3.0 version is slated for release in October.

Readers can look forward to even more new features that are changing the face of mobile devices. According to Muthu, version 3.0 will also have special features designed for iPad.

Malaysiakini is planning to release a mobile application for Android smart phones and tablets by the end of the year.
