New voters would have doomed BN in 1999 polls: Umno delegate

The Umno Youth Assembly was told today that the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition would have lost the 1999 general election should the 680,000 new voters then were allowed to cast their votes.

The delegate from Malacca, Idris Harun, said if these voters were allowed to vote, there was a possibility the BN would have also lost at least eight states to the opposition in 1999.

According to him, the states were Kedah, Penang, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Perlis and Malacca.

These voters were unable to vote as the Election Commission could not gazette them on time for the elections.
