A police report was lodged against a man claiming to be a Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) student yesterday for allegedly changing the lyrics of the national anthem and also for insulting the Malay rulers and the prime minister in his Facebook postings.

UMT deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Yahaya Ibrahim said the report was lodged by the university's registrar at the Gong Badak police station.

He said the man used the name "Mohd Farizal" in his Facebook status.

"We found this out yesterday and immediately lodged a police report," he told reporters when met after the opening of the UMT annual symposium by Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof.

On today's symposium, Yahaya said it was attended by more than 500 participants, including from countries in the Middle-East and Europe, as well as Asean member countries.

In a related development, the Information Communication and Culture Ministry will probe into the report about the student who allegedly posted a video on YouTube mocking the national anthem.

Its minister Rais Yatim said the investigation was to establish whether an offence had been committed under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We are looking into this; people seem to not get enough of listening to pop songs, they now want to turn Negaraku into a pop song," he told reporters at the Gawai Dayak Malaysia open house at Wilson Begat Ak Bakir longhouse in Penom, Ulu
