Information officers should master the new media technology like Facebook, Twitter and blogs to ensure all information about government policies could be thoroughly disseminated and understood by the people, Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim said.

As such, he said, information officers should change their attitude and working approach so that their roles could be more relevant to today's society.

Rais said although the old approaches, such as ' wayang pacak ' (open air cinema) or house-to-house announcement using loud hailers, were still usable, they should be used together with the new approaches to keep them interesting and emotionally effective.

"The opposition's tactic to twist facts into election promises seemed to have worked because they are using cyberspace and new media technology to the fullest and hence, managed to gain support from the people," he said at the Information Department's retreat programme in Angkasapuri today.
