The Somalia government today assured that it would take legal action against four Burundi soldiers if they are found to be responsible for the death of BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Mohammud H Ibrahim said the investigation on the four soldiers was still ongoing and they would be brought to justice as soon as possible if there was a case against them.

“In the name of Somalia and people of Somalia, we would like to thank Malaysia for its understanding of the situation... we are still investigating the case and the people who are responsible for this will be brought to justice,” he said after paying a visit to the late Noramfaizul’s family at their home in Serdang Raya, near Kuala Lumpur today.

noramfaizul mohd nor Mohamed said the initial investigation showed that the incident was unintentional, but the four Burundi soldiers believed involved had been sent back to their country to be tried after the investigation by the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) found them to be responsible for shooting at and causing Noramfaizul’s ( left ) death.

He said the full report and verdict of the trial would be immediately prepared and handed over to the Malaysian government through Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Mohamed said he had handed a letter to Najib yesterday which explained the incident in Mogadishu, and another letter to Noramfaizul’s family which expressed sympathy and condolences for his death.

“We came here from Somalia to express our sincere condolences to the family, friends and relatives and people of Malaysia...we came to say sorry to the people of Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, 1Malaysia Putera Club president Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the Malaysian embassy in Nairobi, Kenya had been asked to monitor the Burundi soldiers’ trial until the disposal of the case.

Noramfaizul, 39, was killed by a sniper gunshot on Sept 2 while in Mogadishu covering the 1Malaysia Putera Club’s humanitarian aid mission in Somalia.

In the incident, TV3 cameraman Aji Sarigar Mazlan was also injured in his arm by a bullet shrapnel that pierced through Noramfaizul’s body.
