The Universiti Malaya (UM) students representative council will gather on Friday to protest the poor Wifi service for which they are being charged RM100 a year.
The student body has set up a Facebook page, calling on students to join the gathering in front of the Chancellory building after Friday prayers.
Treasurer Kelvin Tee said the students are not happy with the quality of the Wifi service and that the problem has not been solved for more than two months.
Campus authorities had levied a ICT fee of RM100, covering the Wifi service and software application, at the start of the current year.
"It is already the 14th week into the semester, but many faculties and residential colleges have faced persistent problems in connecting to the Internet," Tee said.
"There is absolutely no signal in some colleges; in others, there may be a signal but we are not able to connect to the Internet; and in some colleges, connection is slow.”
In the past, he said, Internet connection problems had been isolated cases and had been resolved quickly by the campus authorities.
The Wifi problem has worsened during the current academic year, Tee said.
"We met the vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor to voice our grouses and we’ve complained to the IT centre almost every day, but the problem has not been solved.
"The vice-chancellor promised that the situation would improve by November, but it hasn’t.”
The student body will submit a memorandum to the university to take quick action, as well as to abolish the ICT fee for the next academic year.
They will also demand a refund of RM40.
Deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs) Professor Rohana Yusof could not be reached for comment.
