The parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reforms will meet tomorrow to follow up on the action by Election Commission on the interim recommendations.

Its chairperson, Dr Maximus Ongkili, said this included deliberations on public recommendations with reference to overseas voting, boundary delineation, and media access during election, election funding vis-a-vis what is practised in advanced democracies, such as in Europe.

“Apart from that, PSC would also do a post mortem of the recently-concluded EU (European Union) visit and discuss relevant models for deeper scrutiny and possible enhancements to our current system,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Last week, PSC members led by Ongkili spent a week in the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark to study the electoral processes, which included election funding, access to media and other forms of representation.

The committee has tabled its preliminary report, which consists of 10 proposals, and was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 1.

Since then, there have been developments coming from the series of suggestions made by the committee, which have been taken up by the Election Commission for implementation.

On Feb 15, regulations on the use of indelible ink in the general election was gazetted, along with the approval for any nominated person of a disabled registered voter to accompany and mark the ballot sheet on his or her behalf.

Ongkili said the committee members also had greater clarity on how constituency delineation could be improved following their meeting with British Members of Parliament and officers of the Boundary Commission for England.

He said the final report on the recommendations for electoral reforms was expected to be tabled in Parliament and gazetted by the first week of April.

The PSC was formed on Oct 2 last year and given six months to come up with the proposals.

Besides Ongkili, the other members in the committee are Azmin Ali, P Kamalanathan, Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, Dr Fong Chan Onn, Alexander Nanta Linggi, Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli, Anthony Loke and Wee Choo Keong.
