The Election Commission (EC) today blamed internal updating activities for the disappearance of the link on its official website to pages containing the results of the recently concluded general election.

A spokesperson for the commission said the link was temporarily removed because some of the data listed on the pages last week were not the final results of the polls.

"Some recounting and retabulation has to be done. The pages are still there but we want to wait until we update all the final results obtained from the returning officers (before re-establishing the link)," he said when contacted.

Raised eyebrows

The omission of the link last Thursday had raised eyebrows particularly since the statistics were used by opposition leaders to count discrepancies in voter numbers in order to back their allegations of electoral improprieties.

The result pages are still available for viewing online via a direct URL .

Since last Thursday, the figures for several constituencies - including parliamentary seats in Terengganu and Selangor - were altered compared to when the results pages first appeared on Monday.

Based on the original figures, malaysiakin i had highlighted several unexplained figures mainly the high number of unreturned ballot papers.

However, all figures on the EC website are not considered the final figures and are subject to changes until the results are gazetted.
