Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack yesterday flung a mock up of Lynas’ temporary operating licence (TOL) into a fire, to the cheering crowd of about 600 who gathered at the seafront to witness the climax of the first day rally.

“Burn the TOL, burn Lynas!” chanted one emotional protester.

anti lynas burn coffin 3 Earlier, Wong along with Bersih co-chairperson A Samad Said and other NGO activists, had lit torches before setting fire to black cloths bearing anti-Lynas slogans that were planted into the sand of Balok beach.

They then pulled down a gigantic banner of Lynas, an action they deemed to symbolise the scrapping of Lynas.

The 15-minute session that began at 11.30pm ended with Wong, with arms aloft, leading the protesters to break into loud chants of “Stop Lynas”.  

The night of the first day rally also saw a slew of performing events, such as an Orang Asli dance, poem recitation, band performance, video screening and ceramahs.

The group will continue the Occupy agenda today by embarking on an 11-km convoy of people from Balok beach to the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan.
