The police will not provide the family of deceased detainee G Francis Udayapan with a copy of the DNA test carried out with a blood sample from the latter's father.

"We would not be giving them the report of the blood sample. The matter is still under investigation," said Petaling police station investigating officer Nik Roshazan Nik Abdul Hamid when contacted.

In a statement today, lawyer N Surendran said Francis' mother G Sara Lily wanted a copy of the DNA test.

The lawyer added that it was only fair for the mother to have a copy of the test before she gives her blood sample.

Last week, the police said they needed a blood sample from Sara, to which she agreed.

Francis' remains were recovered from the Klang river 37 days after he had allegedly escaped from the Brickfields police headquarters, where he was being held in relation to a petty theft case.

According to the police, on April 16, the 24-year-old VCD peddler had fled from custody by jumping into a nearby river.

However, his family have disputed this version and accused the police of foul play. An investigation by the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters subsequently cleared the police of any wrongdoing.

Police 'insensitive'

Meanwhile, Nik Roshazan, when asked, said Francis' remains and the post-mortem report would not be handed over to the family as yet.

Commenting on this, Surendran accused the police of being insensitive to the family's plight.

"They are shocked and outraged that the police are still withholding the reports from the family. The family also blames them for being insensitive in not giving them the body," he said.

He added that lawyers would be discussing with the family on the next cause of action and a press conference at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) would be called tomorrow.
