Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar's remark that Bersih is not absolved of liability for ‘offences’ during the April 28 rally has been seen as “possible interference” in the attorney-general’s (AG) functions.

NONE PAS’ Kuala Selangor MP Dzukefly Ahmad (left) noted that only the AG has the authority to institute legal action.

As such, Khairy's comment can be seen as exerting influence on the AG to go after participants in the Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur, he said when contacted.

Khairy had been asked yesterday to comment on the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruling that quashed the home minister’s declaration that Bersih was an unlawful organisation.

He had said this does not mean the actions of those at the Bersih 3.0 rally are legal as they had breached the police barricades at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur during the April 28 gathering.

Responding, Dzulkefly said such remarks would place the AG under greater scrutiny.

“Should he appeal (the court decision) and institute more charges, it could result in the legal system rotting forever,” he warned.
