Malacca has registered approximately 83,500 new voters until Sept 30 last year, said Malacca Barisan Nasional (BN) operations rooms chairperson Othman Mohammad.

He said the Bukit Katil constituency recorded the highest number of registration with 21,900 voters, followed by Tangga Batu (15,600), Kota Melaka (14,000), Alor Gajah (11,800), Jasin (11,600) and Masjid Tanah (8,600).

He said 90 percent of the total or 75,150 were young voters aged, 21 to 39 years old.

“BN is confident of getting support from young voters in the coming 13th general election, based on the voting pattern during the 2008 general election and the success of policies implemented by the BN government currently,” he told reporters after chairing an election coordination meeting in Malacca today.

He said according to the Election Commission’s (EC) 2012 third quarter list, there were 434,885 eligible voters in Malacca.

Othman also said the opposition in Malacca was running out of issues as various problems faced by the people have been successfully solved by the BN government.

He was confident that the Malacca BN would be able to wrest several state assembly seats from the opposition, including Bachang and pulling off an upset in Kota Melaka which is known as DAP’s fortress.
