PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is mulling contesting in a state assembly seat, possibly in Selangor.

“I am eligible to contest in a state assembly seat, but this is still under informal discussions,” national news agency Bernama quoted her saying today.

NONE Meanwhile, Malay-language daily Sinar Harian quotes her saying that she intends to contest in Selangor, subject to discussions on which state assembly seat is suitable.

When contacted regarding the reports, Wan Azizah told Malaysiakini that Selangor is only one of the states being considered.

“They (the reporters) just asked me whether I am eligible to contest in Selangor state assembly seats, and I said, ‘Can, any state assembly seat that is considered by the party...’

“It can be any state legislative assembly seat,” she said.

However, state assemblypersons are required by law to be residents in the state that they serve.

When queried on whether this would limit her to Penang state seats, she said there is still time to change her address.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with PKR’s seat negotiations say seat negotiations in Selangor and Penang are already completed, but Wan Azizah is not on the list of candidates.

However, a source said there could be fresh seat negotiations if she is to contest in those states.

Wan Azizah had served two terms as Permatang Pauh MP, but is currently banned from contesting in a parliamentary seat after vacating her position to make way for her husband Anwar Ibrahim to contest in the resulting by-election.

The five-year ban since July 31, 2008 ends on Aug 1, this year.
