Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today met with governor Abdul Rahman Abbas at his residence at Jalan Utama to seek dissolution of the state assembly tomorrow.
Lim spent roughly 30 minutes with the governor and at 9.30am sharp, the CM’s official Mercedez sped through the gates of the official residence at Seri Mutiara.
The whirlwind visit took reporters waiting outside the gates by surprise and some photographers missed their photo opportunities.
"I have submitted to the governor that tomorrow will be the suggested date for dissolution," said Lim in a written statement handed to the media.
"As I am rushing off to Kuala Lumpur now to attend a Pakatan Rakyat leadership council meeting, I will be arranging for a press conference at Komtar tomorrow at 10.30 am."
The Penang state assembly automatically expires on May 2.
The dissolution will pave the way for the 13th general election, which must be called by June 3.
It is learned that Lim will announce the dissolution on Friday simultaneously with other the Pakatan Rakyat state governments of Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor.
His Kuala Lumpur meeting with Pakatan leaders is likely to be on the same subject and to finalise the list of candidates for the much awaited polls.
Lim said, “The Penang exco met yesterday and agreed with me that the Penang government accept Prime Minister Najib Razak’s written request to me to have a dissolution.”
He added that he is required by Article 19(2) of the Penang constitution to seek the governor’s consent for the dissolution.
