MCA says PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim would rather ignore the people's welfare for the sake of political mileage, based on his criticism of the water agreement between Selangor and the federal government.

Federal Territories MCA publicity bureau chief Lau Chin Kok  expressed concern today that should Anwar ( left ) win in the coming Kajang by-election and take over as menteri besar, Selangor would no longer be as "professionally" run as under current MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s leadership.

Lau said in a statement that DAP should therefore distance itself from Anwar so that the party's Chinese backers would not fall into the opposition leader's trappings.

"Khalid had also disclosed that Anwar was the hidden hand in preventing the state government from working with the federal government over the water crisis, simply so that he can win political mileage.

"Thus, if the state falls into the hands of Anwar, I am afraid of what will happen to Selangor," Lau said.

Lau said that without the federal government's generous help, Selangor would face a water crisis every year.

He therefore lauded Khalid's signing of the memorandum of understanding last week, which also gave green light to the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant.

At the same time, the deal drew on federal support for Selangor's takeover of the state's four water concessionaires.

The secretive MOU has raised protests from many PKR members, including its director of strategy Rafizi Ramli and deputy president Azmin Ali , while Anwar sided with Rafizi on the latter’s right to disclose the deal.

Lau further accused Anwar of not being concerned about the water woes of the Selangor people, saying that Anwar was only eyeing the RM3 billion currently sitting in state reserves.

"If Anwar is even willing to ignore the current water crisis and the people's suffering, it is unimaginable what he plans to do with such a huge amount of money.

"Thus, DAP must wake up now and analyse the situation rationally, stop being exploited by Anwar, and teach this political swindler a lesson," Lau said.

Khalid, who is also PKR's by-election director in Kajang, has said he would seek federal government permission to disclose details of the controversial MOU, which many have demanded.
