Today is the sixth day of Isaiah Jacob's 308km trek from Kuala Lumpur to Gebeng, Kuantan in a symbolic protest against the controversial Lynas rare earth processing plant.

The 48-year-old man, who is also a member of the Kuala Lumpur Tak Nak Insinerator (KTI) group, is making a double environmental statement against both Lynas in Kuantan and the planned incinerator in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.

Jacob's march is no ordinary feat and the one-legged man's determination is just as extraordinary.

Jacob, who was born with one leg, has been making the journey with a pair of crutches and is suffering from blisters on both his hands and feet.

He had covered a distance of 248km on arrival in Gambang at 6.30pm yesterday after five days on the road.

However, he reached there two hours and 30 minutes behind schedule due to his injuries.

Jacob developed blisters on his hands on the second day of his march from Bukit Tinggi to Karak and was forced to seek medical attention before proceeding.

Joyce Lim, who has been accompanying him from Temerloh, expressed concern for his well-being and was unsure whether they will arrive in Gebeng on time.

The plan is to arrive there by tomorrow where Himpunan Hijau activists are planning a blockade against Lynas' plant.

"Today we started at 7am, (and) he had difficulty holding on to his crutches as his hands are wrapped in bandages," Lim told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Final destination

Jacob still needs to cover another 40km before reaching his final destination.

When contacted, Jacob said the people he met throughout his long march have been very supportive and this encouraged him to soldier on.

"I just keep praying and hope that it (injuries) will not affect me and I will arrive on time," he said.

He also commended the police who have assisted him by controlling the traffic during his journey from Mentakab to Maran.

However, when Jacob arrives in Gebeng tomorrow, he will face another hurdle.

The police have obtained a seven-day court injunction against the Himpunan Hijau protesters, preventing them from being within 20 metres of the Lynas factory.
