Cops say no officers at Klang accident

Police have denied allegations that its personnel stood by when a mob attacked victims of a car accident at the Kota Klang roundabout on July 26.

“In the first place, there was no police officer at the scene. Police officers only came after they were called by the public there,” Klang Utara OCPD Mohamad Shukor Sulong told Malaysiakini .

Mohamad Shukor said the victims, who allege that they were assaulted and robbed, were drunk at the time.

“We took action by even investigating the injured party. Currently we are investigating the matter further to determine who was right and who was wrong,” he said.

Mohamad Shukor also appealed to those with information on the matter to come forward to assist in the investigations.

Last Saturday, Pandamaran assemblyperson Eric Tan ( left ) claimed that police had failed to act in the July 26 incident where mobs attacked two men involved in a car accident.

Tan also alleged that a similar attack also took place in another incident on July 27.

When asked, Mohamad Shukor said he had no information on the July 27 case.

Hospitalised after assault

In the July 26 incident, a Proton Wira collided with three cars parked under a flyover, after its driver Lee Keng Long tried to avoid a vehicle, which was said to have suddenly turned into his lane.

Keng Leong’s employer Ngiam Kee Buh, who spoke to media on his behalf, claimed that there were three police officers stationed at a Ramadan market near the scene of the accident.

“The police failed to act when a mob descended on Lee and only stood by idly after being shoved aside by the attackers.

“They tried to break up the fight, but were shoved aside and warned not to interfere,” Ngiam (right) had said.

Ngiam also claimed that the police officers were armed but did not pull out their weapons.

Besides Keng Leong, who was allegedly beaten and robbed, his colleague, Lee Chee Wei, was also hospitalised after being hit with stones and helmets by the group of about 40 people.

In the July 27 incident, Muhammad Hadi Yeop Baharuddin said he was set upon by eight motorcyclists after one of them crashed into his car at 3.30am.

Muhammad Hadi claimed the motorcyclists were participating in an illegal race at the Selat Klang Highway.
