Expressing concern over the outcome of the PAS meeting yesterday over the Selangor menteri besar imbroglio, its central committee member Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the sultan may conclude that Pakatan Rakyat parties are not united on this issue.

 

However, the Parit Buntar MP stopped short of saying whether this would prompt the sultan to dissolve the state assembly, paving the way for a snap election.

"Whatever decision we make must strengthen Pakatan, making it more consistent. But I did not see that happening," said Mujahid, who is also the head of the PAS national unity bureau.

"Without showing consensus among the three Pakatan parties, the sultan will come to the decision that we are not united as one of the component parties (PAS) did not give full support for (PKR president Dr) Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail)," he added.

Mujahid said the party's latest meeting was not in line with its Aug 17 decision to nominate Wan Azizah and her deputy Azmin Ali for the post.

The PAS leader was not present at the meeting as he was attending the Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians Conference on Economy and Development in Teheran, Iran. Malaysia chaired the event.

Speaking to Malaysiakini soon after landing at KLIA, Mujahid said if he had attended, he would have pressed the party to stick to its earlier decision.

PAS yesterday decided not to name any candidate and allow the sultan to decide on who should replace the incumbent Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Khalid is set to meet the sultan this afternoon and is expected to push for the dissolution of the state assembly.

Meanwhile, Mujahid said the sultan does not interfere in politics and is only interested in procedural matters.

His duty would be to ensure that the state constitution is adhered to and whether Wan Azizah has the majority or qualification to be MB.

"If PKR did not seriously check the constitution as to whether Wan Azizah is qualified to be menteri besar, then it would be rather unjust and could create another crisis and another decision is needed," he added.

Wan Azizah has revealed that she has the majority support in the 56-member state assembly, with 30 state assemblypersons, including two from PAS, backing her.
