DAP and PKR will only name PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as their sole Selangor menteri besar candidate to replace incumbent Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

This despite a decree by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah that all three parties nominate "more than two names" each from among Pakatan Rakyat Selangor representatives.

In a joint statement late today, DAP and PKR said that in 2013, the sultan had asked for more than one name.

A copy of a letter from the palace on dated May 7, 2013 (left) - two days after the 13th general election - provided to the press showed the sultan had asked for four names.

However, all three Pakatan parties responded by submitting only one name.

Going by this "convention", they said, PKR and DAP will only submit Wan Azizah's name this time around.

"PKR and DAP uphold the sultan's decree and will present Wan Azizah for the sultan's consideration in line with the convention practiced by Pakatan in 2013...

"(This is) as Wan Azizah already has support of at least 30 members of the state legislative assembly including herself," they said.

The statement was issued by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution (right) and DAP Selangor chief Tony Pua.

The sultan had after an audience with Khalid this afternoon said that he accepts Khalid's request to resign pending the appointment of his replacement.

The ruler also asked all Pakatan parties to submit "more than two names" each for the sultan to choose from, following "convention".

In a press conference later, Khalid explained that this is practice which occured even in the sultan's father's time where up to four names were submitted for consideration. 

The incumbent MB said he also sought that the sultan make public the list of candidates submitted to him for consideration in 2008 and 2013.

What will PAS do?

In an immediate statement, Selangor PAS "accepts" the sultan's decree.

However, PAS secretary general Mustafa Ali ( left ) yesterday said that the party will leave it to the wisdom of the sultan, and not nominate anyone.

According to PAS central committee member Khalid Samad, the decision was made after failure to reach consensus in a heated discussion.

He said some committee members wanted to only submit Wan Azizah's name as she has majority support of the House, especially since PKR deputy president Azmin Ali had declined the nomination.

Others wanted to follow PAS' Aug 17 decision to submit both her and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's names.

PAS leaders said the two-candidate option came about after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's audience with the sultan on July 31.
