An Indian NGO today slammed Malay rights group Perkasa for urging state elections to be called in Selangor following the menteri besar imbroglio.

Malaysian Indians Progressive Association (Mipas) said today that calling a state election was up the Selangor sultan’s discretion, questioning if Perkasa had the majority support of “Chinese and Indian voters”.

Its secretary-general S Bharathidasan ( right ) also questioned if the government would pay heed if Mipas were to conduct a survey and found that a majority of the people want Parliament to be dissolved.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali claimed yesterday that it had conducted a survey and found that most of the people in the state wanted the state assembly to be dissolved.

“Who is Perkasa to urge state elections?” he asked.

“Will the government agree if we conduct and a survey and the majority of people urge a dissolution of Parliament?” he added.

Bharathidhasan also said that Perkasa’s urgingfor state elections would be the “end of democracy”.
