DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang today asked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to give an undertaking that he is not muzzling parliamentary debate on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), by opting to take legal action against a DAP MP for raising issues with the state-owned investment arm.

 

In a statement, Lim hoped that the legal suit against Tony Pua will not be used to "shut down any public questioning of any aspect of 1MDB."

 

"Najib should not shoot the messenger just because of Tony’s ( right ) message that is demanding full accountability and transparency about the 1MDB scandal," he said.

 

Lim today listed three important items of "unfinished business" that Najib has to undertake before Parliament ends its sitting for this calendar year next week.

 

The first, Lim said, is the tabling of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on illegal immigrants in Sabah, which has been completed but is not expected to be released until next month, which means it will not be scrutinised and debated in Parliament. 

 

The second is a white paper on the threat of the Islamic State (IS) militants in Malaysia, something the government had announced before but has not tabled till today.

 

1MDB, a Najib brainchild, has accrued debts totaling to RM42 billion and had attracted attention from opposition lawmakers and also former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
