Enforce Sedition Act fairly, urges minister
There should no bias in the enforcement of the Sedition Act, said Health Minister S Subramaniam.
There should no bias in the enforcement of the Sedition Act, said Health Minister S Subramaniam.
"Christians don't want their rights to be questioned, Hindus don't want their rights to be questioned, Muslims don't want their rights to be questioned.
"In that sense, we are all balanced,” he told reporters in Putrajaya today. He emphasised that the enforcement of the act must be in a way that is fair to all.
He was responding to a question whether Umno Permatang Pauh Umno chief Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said (left) and Baling Wanita Umno chief Mashitah Ibrahim should be charged with sedition for their remarks made in the Umno AGM recently.
However, Subramaniam did not give a direct answer whether they should be charged.
While Mashitah during her speech at the Wanita Umno assembly related the issue of Chinese allegedly torching pages of the Quran during a prayer ritual, Zaidi had allegedly said :
"We (Umno) are very unlucky because we lost badly in constituencies with a majority of Chinese voters. So, this shows that the Malays in Penang support Umno, regardless of them being ‘mamak’ (Indian-Muslim) or 'keling'."
"It’s education, all Malaysians have rights above this racial tone. Some politicians feel that only by using race as a tool can we get popularity. So this is an education for both politicians and others.
"(When) Everyone gets educated, things can get better," the MIC deputy president added.
Meanwhile, he revealed that the cabinet meeting today had discussion on the said Act and once the amendments are drafted, the cabinet members will give their input, and it will then be tabled in the parliament afterwards.
“So whatever is tabled in parliament will be something which is agreed upon by all of us.”
He also stated that one of the motions at the coming MIC AGM this month will be on the Sedition Act.
