Ex-detainees award shows gov’t can do wrong

YOURSAY ‘Is this another sign that Middle Malaysia is now speaking out?’

Five former ISA detainees get RM4.5mil award

Disgusted: Am I dreaming that this was awarded by the allegedly subservient courts to opposition members?

What I really wonder is, will they be paid? Or will Federal Court reverse the judgment and all end up not getting anything. I am not holding my breath.

Malaysian 53: The judiciary does surprise us once in a while. I hope the judges will be objective when it really matters - the Anwar Ibrahim Sodomy II appeal verdict.

The Federal Court judges only have to look at one point in making their decision. To prove it was a conspiracy - the fact that a local university dropout can meet the then DPM Najib Abdul Razak before the supposed sodomy act. Doesn't it all smell of a rat?

The other fact is that he also met another top cop Rodwan Mohd Yusof (from the first sodomy trial) at Concorde Hotel to discuss the matter.

The judges are supposedly people of high intellect. Here is your time to prove your worth.

Fateh: I do hope that this country's judiciary will one day be fair and just, not controlled by the powers-that-be. May justice prevail for Malaysians.

Liew Lean Kut: Dear Fateh, I have the same hope that you have - a fair judiciary is the foundation of a true democracy.

In recent months, I had observed that there is a change for the better in the judiciary. I hope there are no more judges like the retired judge who spewed out racial statements .

Judges should conduct themselves like statesmen so that people will have confidence in them.

Pakatan-ku: Is this Court of Appeal judgment another sign that Middle Malaysia is now speaking out?

Peacemaker : May God bless these judges for recognising an injustice was committed against these people.

Less Religion Please: I am sure nobody cares as taxpayers’ money is being used for this entire political circus. Anyway, congrats to the judiciary for being bold enough to do the right thing.

Anticonmen: Instructions from the 'sky' to let go this case just to show the independence of the courts so that the Anwar case decision can be justified to the people as also being by an ‘independent’ judiciary. Don't be fooled by the cunningness of conmen.

Real Truth: God is great, for injustice to its own sons on false charges for political gain is the most shameful and despicable act.

This is the reason why majority of Malaysians are against the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the Sedition Act.

If this Act is used judiciously against terrorists and racists, it would make sense, and not to be used selectively only to intimidate opponents of the government.

Ayfy19: Quote: "The interrogations conducted by the police showed the arrests had nothing to do with national security ‘but was about opposition politics’ and to justify this, a media statement was issued by Bukit Aman claiming they possessed rocket launchers, and had held meetings with Thai separatist guerillas."

This shows the authorities cannot be trusted.

Paul Warren: In other words, the Umno-led federal government can do wrong.

Pputeh: The joke is that the police and Home Ministry committed the wrong and we the people pay the penalty.

These people should be made to pay from their pockets, only then they will know the pain. Or those responsible should have it deducted off their pension.

Ng Kam Loon: Indeed, this so-called compensation should be coughed out by Umno, and not from national coffers.

Lim Chong Leong: The home minister responsible for their detention must resign or fork out the money himself. How can they simply detain someone illegally to protect the evil regime only for the people to pay the damages?

Kang Kong King: But really, is that money is enough to compensate their loss of freedom? Their suffering due to the torture at the hand of their jailers? Loss of dignity and humiliation due to the detention?

That’s why the ISA, Sedition Act and laws like that must go.

Sa Tombs: Muslims were not allowed to pray? They should all, from the minister to the IGP (inspector-general of police) to the interrogators, be charged with sedition. Let the minister and the AG chew on this.

Haveagreatday: My, my! Has the ‘Arab Spring’ finally reached our judiciary? This is as should be - the rakyat must have an independent as the last bulwark against the excesses of the executive.

A free, neutral and independent judiciary is what the rakyat hopes will grow again in our beloved country.

Mushiro: This shows that to stay in power, the government will do anything, including misusing the police to torture the opposition. This has been proven time and again.

The courts should impose a punitive sentence on those involved as otherwise it would not a deterrent to future culprits.
