The losses were not only in terms of damage to the shops and goods for being inundated in flood water for days, but by unscrupulous individuals who took advantage of the flood situation to break into these premises.
According to the police, six business premises in the district have been broken into since the floods hit Kelantan about two weeks ago, and five people aged between 12 and 30 have been arrested for investigation.
A pet-shop owner in Wakaf Che Yeh, Mohd Fadzil Mat Sulung, 57, said it saddened him that they were people who took advantage of the flood situation to steal by breaking into business premises.
"The traders have lost a lot because their goods are already damaged in the floods, but this is being aggravated by theft.
"For goods which are wet, they (traders) can still sell them at lower prices," he told Bernama in Kota Bharu today.
'I didn't expect the floods to be this bad'
Mohd Fadzil estimated his losses at more than RM100,000.
"I didn't expect the flood to be this bad that it even submerged my shop. The flood not only damaged the shop and equipment at the premises, but also killed the pets there, like cats, birds and chickens,” he added.
Meanwhile, a hardware shop owner - Yong Yok Fan, 58 - said he would auction off items that have been affected by the floods.
"There is nothing else I can do," said Yong, who estimated his losses at RM10,000.
A check by Bernama in the Kota Baru town area found cleaning work being carried out at most of the business premises, while workers from the Kota Baru Municipal Council and the Public Works Department were spotted cleaning the roads of mud and other debris from the flood.
