A picture of a flood victim being reduced to tears by Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali’s willingness to wash her batik sarong is now fodder for ridicule.

Instead of feeling touched by the image of Azmin getting his hands dirty, party foe Badrul Hisham Shahrin unearths another picture – this time showing the flood victim laughing out loud.

"Pic 1: A sad picture of a woman touched by the MB washing her clothes.

"Pic 2: The MB uses social media to show that the woman was saddened.

"Pic 3: After the director calls out ‘action’ and then ‘cut’, the actor laughs heartily,” Badrul Hisham, also known as Chegubard wrote on Facebook.

Chegubard, who was suspended from PKR for anti-Azmin statements during the Selangor MB crisis also slammed those defending Azmin for practising double standards.

He said the same people criticise BN leaders for posing with flood victims.

But according to Azmin, both the pictures are true but just not arranged in order.

He said the woman had initially laughed when he first offered to wash her clothes when he visited the flood-hit village in Kuala Krau, Pahang yesterday.

"When I offered, she was excited but she wasn’t sure that the MB would wash her clothes.

"But when I took one of the batik sarong she started crying because she was so emotional. That batik sarong belonged to her,” he said when contacted soon after arriving from the trip today.

He said that those who imply he was faking it fail to mention other pictures of him getting his hands dirty.

“Why not use pictures of me lifting rubbish, washing homes and all that? You can really feel the suffering of the people when you wash with them and realise how difficult it is,” he said.

“Many people visit like tourists, they get briefings and they leave. You can’t know how difficult it is by just getting briefings from the ground.”

This is Azmin’s second trip to flood-hit states, with his earlier visit to Kelantan.

Selangor was the first to offer aid to the state, worst hit in the deluge which displaced 200,000 in at least five states at its height.

Selangor has allocated RM5 million and deployed local council staff and heavy machinery to help with the recovery efforts.

The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) will also oversee two developers the state has commission to rebuild homes using prefabrication and Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) technology once the Kelantan government gives the all clear, he said.

"Our focus is to reconstruct, so their lives can return to normal," he said.
