Kelantan Menteri Besar and PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz is to undergo a coronary angioplasty operation on Thursday, a week after suffering a heart attack, an aide said.

"He will be admitted into the National Heart Centre (IJN) and will undergo surgery to clear blocked arteries on the left side of his heart," Anwar Bakri, political secretary to the Islamic leader, told AFP today.

Hatta Ramli, a PAS central committee member told AFP that the surgery was somewhat risky but that the hospital was the best equipped in the country to perform the procedure.

Hatta said Nik Aziz, 73, successfully underwent a similar coronary angioplasty last Friday on his right side of the heart.

PAS suffered a severe blow in March elections at the hands of Umno led by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
