If Umno can tell MCA to leave BN for opposing hudud, then shouldn't Umno veteran Dr Mahathir Mohamad be given the same treatment for blocking the implementation of the Islamic criminal law?

 

This was a question posed by MCA syariah law and policy implementation special task force chairperson Gan Ping Sieu.

 

Gan was responding to Cheras Umno division chief Syed Ali Alhabshee ( below ) who yesterday said MCA was free to sever ties with Umno if it is unhappy that Umno is pushing for hudud.

 

"Perhaps, he should also demand Mahathir to leave Umno first. Mahathir has consistently said no to hudud implementation," said Gan in a Facebook posting today.

 

He had previous urged MCA and other BN component parties to sever ties with Umno if the party allows amendments to federal laws that will pave the way for the implementation of the seventh-century punishments.

 

Gan said MCA as a founding partner of the country had a duty to defend the federal constitution.

 

"The consensus of BN is no to the implementation of hudud. 

 

"MCA will surely decide on our own accord, not under anyone's dictate, let alone a liability figure like Syed Ali," said Gan.

 

Gan said the precondition for hudud is a just society, drawing parallels to Caliph Umar who suspended the application of hudud punishments during his rule.

 

"Our concern is the future of this multiracial nation and the grave injustice and inequality that (it) would cause to Muslim and non-Muslim alike, with the implementation of hudud," he said.
