MCA Youth has come out in defence of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak dragging his feet on the ruling coalition's stand regarding the hudud bill.

Its chief Chong Sin Woon said since BN rejected the implementation of hudud in Kelantan, there is no reason for Najib, who is the coalition's chairperson, to rush his announcement.

"BN has already decided to reject hudud and it was already stated in the BN supreme council meeting. Is there any organisation higher than BN supreme council?

"Why must PM be eager to come out with a statement? BN already announced that it rejects hudud," he told reporters when queried on the matter.

He also opined that Najib's silence would not erode his support amongst the non-Muslim communities.

Chong was also confident that Umno lawmakers would not vote in favour of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's private member's bill should it be tabled in Parliament.

He said the MPs would not emulate Umno assemblypersons in Kelantan who unanimously voted for the enactment.

After the state assembly passed the amendments on March 19, BN component party leaders met with Najib on the same day to express their objection.

Following the meeting, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai claimed that Najib would issue a statement the next day but this never materialised.

The prime minister's delay on this fueled speculations ranging from waiting for the opposition to implode over the hudud row to being unable to reach a consensus within BN.

Chong seemed reluctant to answer when asked if MCA would leave BN if Umno were to support Hadi's private member's bill.

"Breaking ties are now pretty much Pakatan's issue. They have their own family issues [...] why ask the other families to break up too?

"There's is no break up issue in BN," Chong stressed.

MCA syariah law and policy implementation special task force head Gan Peng Sieu had urged the party to consider breaking ties with Umno if the latter endorses in Parliament PAS's move to implement hudud laws in Kelantan.

Taking aim at DAP, Chong claimed DAP had made a joke of itself when it decided to break ties with Hadi, Sabah PAS and Sarawak PAS.

"PAS presence in Sabah and Sarawak is minimal [...] and how can you cut ties with Hadi but stay in Pakatan? You make a lot of jokes.

"If you cut ties with PAS in Selangor, where the representatives from each party are balanced, then I will respect you," he challenged.
