Sacked activist teacher mulls writing to Dr M

Mohd Nor Izzat Mohd Johari, the teacher who led the movement against the faulty online system plaguing teachers nationwide in 2013 and 2014, has been sacked.

According to the letter delivered to him on Monday, the art teacher was terminated with immediate effect from March 31, 2014.
Now jobless, the Kelisa Umno branch youth chief told Malaysiakini he is mulling writing two letters - one to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and another to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"I am reviewing my options, either to appeal or write a letter to express my regret to Najib and Mahathir.
"We have to accept the fact that the PM may not be able to do anything, but I will write to him out of respect because he is the PM," Mohd Nor Izzat, 30, said.
"I will also be writing to Mahathir for words of encouragement as an Umno member. I have never revealed my party affiliations throughout my struggle, but it is now time to do so."
Mohd Nor Izzat was among three teachers transferred following their involvement in the movement to urge the government to fix problems related to the school-based assessment (SBA) online system.
Teachers, among others, had complained of having to key in progress reports in the faulty system in the wee hours to the system is clogged up most of the time.
The system reportedly crashed so often forcing teachers to spend hours trying to key in the reports. The issue was also raised by delegates at the 2013 Umno general assembly .
Nor Izzat said the ministry has since scrapped the online system and is using manual reporting.
Entrapment
"The ministry acknowledged the faults after we had the Feb 22, 2014 rally ( Himpunan 222 ). We tried to voice out our objections through formal means, but it fell on deaf ears," he said.

"We were given verbal assurance that no action will be taken against us... but it was a trap," he said.
"But when I went back to school (to teach) the next week, an investigation was launched, leaving us with no choice but to resort to Himpunan 222," he said.
He was subjected to "five levels of investigations" in January 2015, with officers from the district education office to federal officers coming to the school he teaches in Pahang to question him, he said.
The SBA online reporting system was part of the 1Bestari Net project, which included providing high-speed 4G broadband coverage to schools.
Last November, the Auditor-General's report revealed that 1Bestari Net provider YTL Communications Sdn Bhd did not complete the RM633 million project by the June deadline.
Internet connection was also patchy in 70 percent of schools audited, and connection for some schools were delayed by up to 439 days with no penalties on the service provider.
