KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 ― Issues involving transparency or governance in government must be viewed seriously and if there was a problem, solved promptly.

Umno Deputy President and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the existence of a transparent government with good governance is currently a priority for the people when making a political choice.

“This includes the issue of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) which cannot be allowed to drag on and every allegation on misappropriation in the management of 1MDB must be independently, transparently and fairly investigated quickly and those responsible brought to justice.

“The image of Umno cannot be smeared with the issue of 1MDB because trust is an important commodity which is the core belief of the people in the party and government,” he said in a message in conjunction with the 69th anniversary of Umno.

If Umno leaders were trustworthy when carrying out their leadership duties and responsibilities, clean, no issues of misbehaviour or misappropriation, the party would receive the support of the people.

“On the other hand, if leaders are not trustworthy, the people will reject our party. As members of Umno who love the party, we must always prioritise the struggle of the party,” said Muhyiddin.

He said, since its inception, Umno had succeeded in creating racial harmony and had safeguarded the stability of the nation by cooperating and sharing power with colleagues in the component parties of Barisan Nasional.

However, the position of Umno is not as secure as before, apart from failing to defend a two-third majority in the 12th and 13th general elections, Umno is also facing a problem of perception which is becoming more critical.

“Undeniably, the Malays still have high hopes on Umno to look after their welfare but, I am worried if the issues which are plaguing our party is not answered well to convince the people on the sincerity of Umno's struggle, the people will reject Umno in the general election and we will be forced to let go the trust of leadership we shouldered all these while,” he said.

He said, the survival of Umno depended on how far the people saw it as a party which could be trusted, as such its members must always self-evaluate, repair all shortcomings and act to correct the situation before it is too late. ― Bernama
