A total of 209 schools in South Korea suspended classes today over fears of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers).

Almost 90 percent of the schools are located in Gyeonggi province, Xinhua news agency reported.

Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Education Minister Hwang Woo-yea said at a meeting with school superintendents that stronger preventive measures were needed in schools until public health safety was ensured.

The suspended schools in Gyeonggi include 58 kindergartens, 105 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, two high schools and three special education schools.

A 58-year-old woman from the province died of Mers on Monday.

The number of South Koreans diagnosed with the disease including two deaths rose to 30 as of today.
