Sarong rule - RTD guard a convenient scapegoat

YOURSAY ‘So the guard is better than the office manager in customer service?’

‘Guard gave sarong fearing denial of service at RTD’

TC Chan: If the guard gave the sarong to the lady because he feared she might not get service from Road Transport Department (RTD) counter staff because her knees were showing, then his initiative and the good intention had gone wrong. He should not be blamed.

RTD is responsible because it had a dress code based on religious norms, which was sufficiently ambiguous.

Oilman: I find it utterly shocking that the transport minister is now trying to shift the blame to the guard instead of the person who gave him the instruction to issue the ‘sarong’.

The guard will never do this on his own accord, and I am very sure he has been instructed by some higher-ups.

Deputy Transport Minister Ab Aziz Kaprawi was quoted in The Star as saying that the guard would be transferred out.

What an astoundingly brilliant and effective deterrent sentence. I am certain the guard must now be consumed in unmitigated terror with such a horrific punishment. My heart bleeds for my beloved nation.

Leonie: Why need more than two days before coming out with this 'explanation' that the guard is better than the office manager in customer service?

Justice Pao: The RTD must be paying quite a lot to these sympathetic guards such that the guards can use their own money to buy sarongs for visitors to RTD.

MatiLoh: In our government services, whenever there are wrongdoings it is always the people in the lower or lowest ranks who are blamed, while the bosses who make the decisions get away scot free.

However, when it comes to getting recognition it is the other way around.

Anonymous$&@?: Minister Liow Tiong Lai, please don't try to cover up for the RTD. The guard is only carrying out his duty according to the ‘sarong rule’ that was put up by the department.

You are like the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), blaming ex-cop Sirul Azhar Umar for killing Altantuya Shaariibuu but not asking who gave the order.

CHKS: Come on, why are you taking action only against the guard? Guards usually follow orders.

If there were really no instruction from the management, for what reasons would the guard want to ‘pandai-pandai’ ask the customers to wear sarong?

Sarong gets Liow in knot with Isma

RR: What is moral is subjective. What is moral in Middle East is not for the universe. Liow is right. The chief secretary to the government should review the dress code.

The government officers cannot impose a regimented dress code as long as the public are decently dressed covering their vital private parts.

Well Thats Fantastic: What is it with Isma? Aren't they about Islam? Why are they out to protect us all from ourselves and our morals? Seriously, this is insane.

The actions of a person are theirs and no one else’s and if they don't harm anyone why should you care?

If you are dieting, do you get angry when you see someone else eating cake? If you do, you need psychological help.

Anon1: How utterly embarrassing. Liow has bad morals, according to a complete nobody. If no action is taken against Isma for this, Liow might as well don a sarong over his head whenever he steps out from home.

Dr Patricia A Martinez: When it suits Isma, suddenly they have the cheek to speak on behalf of ‘the values of Malaysian society’.

Was the woman who was punished not a Malaysian? Yes, RTD went further than they have ever done and taken punitive action, is punishing the public part of the civil service terms and conditions of RTD?

Don't hit us and then when convenient, speak up about values, Isma. It is called hypocrisy.

RatBatBlue: I wonder if Malaysiakini is joking with us. Please tell me that this Isma guy is a fictitious character. I can’t believe that by supporting what appears to be normal behaviour, one can be accused of engaging in a heinous lifestyle.

Could there be a misunderstanding? Was Isma referring to the rampant corruption/inefficiency which plagues the RTD as immoral and heinous?

What about that, Mr Isma? Does that not bother you? Have you even once complained of corruption, inefficiency and rudeness in the department?

Liow, don’t back down now. Show these characters that you mean business.

Anonymous_1419577444: Fantastic! While RM42 billion has gone missing, these two parties are arguing about dress codes.

Common Good of Society: Congratulations to Nigel and Malaysiakini . Wouldn't it be wonderful if all other news media could emulate your excellent example in accurate, unbiased and truthful reporting?

I pray for the safety of all reporters as you are exposed to certain elements of danger. God bless.

Abasir: Another achievement by Malaysiakini and a proud moment for Nigel. Congratulations, and thank you for setting impossibly high standards.

LYY: Congratulations Nigel! A really remarkable achievement for someone who joined as an intern less than five years ago.

This also says something about Malaysiakini that it can let young talent soar (including their former staff member, Indrani Kopal, who recently won a Cannes prize for her documentary).

Vijay47: Most popular in Malaysia, most admired in Asia. That's quite an achievement, Nigel and Malaysiakini . Congratulations!

The unfortunate thing is, unearthing secrets royal, political, or business will not be leading to anything. But all the same, Nigel, you have done a great job.
