‘Let us all not react to racial provocation’

YOURSAY ‘This incident smells as fishy as the backlanes of Jalan Alor.’

Mob violence near Low Yat Plaza, several hurt

ZhuGeLiang: Whether it is cheating or theft, is our police force not capable of handling a simple crime like this? I cannot understand why NGOs should get involved in this matter.

Recently our honourable minister Hishammuddin Hussein aptly said, "Nobody is above the law." Is the NGOs then not committing a crime by doing so?

Oh Ya?: Why has the police allowed this mob, which is filled with racial overtones, to drag on? Why isn't the full force of the laws be meted out on them?

Where is the FRU (Federal Reserve Unit)? What is the inspector general of police's and the home minister's stance?

Are they the same group of Umno samseng that mob every other day in Penang and also in Johor? Is it the ruling elite's grand scheme to create racial conflict and religious disharmony to divert attention from their problems?

Vijay47: That the Kuala Lumpur police chief had to say " We shall be fair " reveals much about the public image and expectancy of our police force.

The general assumption, rightly or not, that a gang of 200 thugs brazenly demonstrating outside a shopping mall were treated with kid gloves is a truth that cannot be denied - a serious racial riot could have erupted and the police had time to negotiate with them.

For far too many times have we seen the police carrying out their duties in strange selective ways, to say the least.

What Sunday's scary incident also reveals is that certain sections of the community are confident enough to believe that the law would not be applied to them as it would against others, that thieves from amongst them cannot be apprehended.

To a large degree, they have been shown to be right and tomorrow, certain leaders will claim that their street response was understandable. From now on, many would fear that it is no longer safe to go even to shopping centres. As well as to church.

Anonymous #559621516: The instigators should be hauled up for questioning. When you gather a large number of people late at night to protest about something, for sure temperatures are going to rise and some people are going to get excited and the excitement then spreads causing the crowd to turn into a mob.

Southpaw: FRU is often called in to "maintain the peace and order" in cases of removing squatters but you don't see the brave FRU around to keep the peace in front of Low Yat.

Bobster: Indeed, where are the super-efficient FRU? Expert in harassing and beating up good rakyat during Bersih calling for clean and fair election but totally not at the scene when mob and gangsters rioting.

Anonymous_1423808262: Well, if there is racial riot, PM will declare emergency and rule by National Security Council. Then 1MDB issue will be sidelined as anybody mentioning it will be arrested for threatening national security. Problem solved.

Hopefully, the other races do not react to any provocation.

Mushiro: This would have started as a genuine misunderstanding but some instigators saw some opportunity to turn this into a bigger issue. The police have failed to handle this well by nipping it at the bud.

In fact, the police seem to be letting this grow. How can the police allow this to lead to a cat-and-mouse situation with the mob?

The police have always been decisive whenever dealing with opposition protests. So is this an Umno-sponsored protest?

Anonymous_1378093545: This is so unacceptable. What has our home minister got to say? And why bar journalists from doing their job?

We need to know what is happening and PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) is not going to give us the truth as usual. This is seen by many as a blatant attempt to start racial riots here.

Most Malaysians are aware of the government's intention to divert attention from the real problems it has to deal with.

You will not turn the races against one another because we actually like everyone and desire to live in harmony.

Mr Chin Ho-chiak: Which is more serious? Stealing billions of ringgits of public money or stealing a handphone? Come on Malaysians, get real.

Anonymous_1421806811: A sad, sad day for Malaysia. These people have totally no respect for law and order. Mob violence in the name of race or religion must never be tolerated.

These people have no qualms about destroying the livelihood of others for their selfish intentions. I hope the police will take stern action against them.

Anonymous_1423808262: It is very, very important that the targeted persons should not respond/retaliate to any provocations as their aim is to create chaos to usher in emergency rule.

The whole episode is probably staged and no prize for guessing who's behind it.

Basically: Yes, this incident smells as fishy as the backlanes of Jalan Alor. Just as Umno is collapsing under its own weight and ego, suddenly this happens.

Who fights over a lousy handphone? People get ripped off all the time in Bukit Bintang.

Speak For All: Is this a ploy to divert the attention from the 1MDB scandal? This so-called rioting surely cannot be former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's work.

Not Convinced: Perfect - the kampung folk, instead of talking about 1MDB scandal during the Hari Raya break, will now be talking about the Low Yat fracas.
