Malay Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom has been granted bail on condition that he does not 'disturb' other witnesses with regard to the Low Yat plaza incident.

Failing which, Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Jagjit Singh said his bail would be revoked.

Bail was fixed at RM8,000 with one surety while the case is scheduled for next mention on July 30.

Mohd Ali, who is known as Ali Tinju, pleaded trial to a charge under Section 4 (1) (b) of the Sedition Act for allegedly making an inflammatory speech outside the plaza, where a riot broke out over the weekend.

Apart from being told to keep his distance from witnesses, he was also cautioned not to commit another offence under Section 4 (1) (b), which could result in the revocation of his bail.

Any person who is guilty shall be jailed for minimum three years but not exceeding seven years.

Shouted ‘Hidup Melayu’ twice

The defiant Mohd Ali, with his five companions, shouted “Hidup Melayu” (Long live the Malays) twice after posting bail.

However, he declined to give further comment.

After Mohd Ali pleaded not guilty, deputy public prosecutor S Ravindran requested the bail be set at RM10,000.

However, lawyer K Ragunath asked for RM5,000 as Mohd Ali do not have a permanent job and is now working as a small trader to support his five schoolgoing children.

Ragunath added that his client gave full cooperation during his three-day remand assisting police investigation.

Mohd Ali was arrested on Tuesday afternoon when he surrendered himself at Dang Wangi police headquarters.

He was spotted making a racially-charged speech during the Low Yat plaza incident on Sunday.

The violence erupted over handphone theft a day earlier. The following night, a mob of 200 people turned up at the entrance of Low Yat Plaza and started to riot.

At least six people were injured and many arrested.
